Losing at home to Chelsea was the killer. Fucking Neil Orr getting out jumped by Pat Nevin.

Was that the week we played & won 4 times and won all 4. Will go to my grave believing that if Chelsea had held Liverpool on the Saturday, we would have won at Goodison on the bank holiday monday and the title would have been ours,

The 86 boys will get a good reception on Monday night. Arguably West Ham's best ever team although Bonzo says it was the 1981 team and the 64/65 team provided the club with it's finest hour....excluding the 66 World Cup Final of course.

I was a student living in Hackney that year - got to nearly every home game and this was second only to the Ipswich match for noise, chaos and congas. In the South Bank just behind the goal, fantastic.

Iirc we had to win by 5 clear goals to go 3rd, I was confident before the game that we'd win but not by 5 goals. Also remember the geordies cheering like they'd scored a goal afet Beardsley saved a simple back-pass. Great night, love to see a few more like it.

I was a graduate trainee back then and we were all at an offsite training program on the Cromwell Rd.
That night was the only one they gave us off and we were sitting around talking about what to do on our night off. I suggested Upton. Park. Most of the others had never been to a football match before and wanted to give it a try so off we went, about 12 of us.
We were in th North Bank. What a night. None of them will ever forget their first football match. I has to explain that it isn't always like that..
